Social impact Statement Global Pathways to Success Uganda leads the community to combat an epidemic of Tungiasis, a neglected disease, Eastern Uganda. Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by permanent penetration blood-feeding sand flea (jigger flea) which burrows into hosts’ skin into the toe nails, finger nails, elbows, ankles, knees, buttocks, lips, eyelids. When a pregnant female flea feeds on patient’s blood, it grows fat and lays egg colonies the shape and size of a pea that can cause pus-filled sores. Tungiasis can lead to fibrosis ulceration, gangrene, loss of toe nails, amputation of fingers and even death, studies show. In non-vaccinated individuals it can lead to tetanus. Children are the most affected and the pests are multiplying geometrically such that in every home at least two children who are out of school because of jigger disease, most cannot walk to school, others drag their sore feet .50, 000 children in Mayuge district can know study well, without being affected by jiggers .GPSU has managed to teach and engage 1372 families and the community skills on body hygiene campaign in an intensified fight against jiggers. |
